"S' Oit Haus" (the old house) - the Stroblhaus and its history

In the Stroblhaus, an occasional crackle, creak and groan is commonplace. The beams of the old farmhouse are constantly in motion and tell all kinds of exciting stories from times gone by.

Meanwhile, the Stroblhaus is already so old that its actual age can only be estimated. It can be assumed that this Pongau paired farmhouse, typical for the Salzburg region, was built over 600 years ago. Originally, the farm probably once belonged to a Protestant family, but like 80 percent of the Werfenweng Protestants, they had to leave their home in 1732 for religious reasons. In 1867 the Stroblgut came into the possession of the Astner family.

Anyone who wants to decipher the original purchase contract, which is still preserved today, should first familiarize with the Kurrent script  (old german script) that was used in the past. Contrary to the customs of the time, Anna Astner eventually inherited the Stroblhaus, as her brother and actual heir to the farm, Anton Astner, had been killed in World War 1. Anna, also generally known as the "Godei", was a very hard-working and intelligent woman. She was never married. Potential suitors are said to have never received more than a schnapps from the "Godei". She received help with the farm work from servants, some of whom also found quarters in the Stroblhaus. Later, guests also took up residence in a converted apartment. Anna is thus considered the first hostess of Werfenweng. Her niece, who was actually at home on a neighboring farm, eventually helped the aging lady out more and more.

So she first assisted with various field work and later also took over the milking of the cows in Wengerau. No wonder, then, that the "Godei" bequeathed the Stroblgut to his capable niece. Together with her husband, she raised 12 children on the Stroblgut and added a new house to the farm, which served as home for the extended family. The old Stroblhaus thus stood empty for a long time and was only used by children as a playground.

Today, however, it is impossible to imagine life without the old Stroblhaus. Its authentic historical flair makes the rustic restaurant the popular meeting place for locals as well as guests of Bergresort Werfenweng. Enjoy hearty alpine dishes, refreshing drinks and the best view in the charming ambience of the Stroblhaus or in the cozy guest garden!
